Cabarlah firm finds job for CFS sufferer

Dave Brett is happy, but nervous.

The 45-year-old man, who has been on a disability pension for a decade, will start a new job on Thursday.

In a positive end to the Disability Action Week, Justin Clarke of JPC Engineering, Cabarlah, yesterday agreed to give Mr Brett a four-week trial.

He will be working eight hours a week, just like he wanted.

Mr Brett left work for a month initially suffering Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and there was no going back as his back, knee and feet degenerated. But he was bored and tired of vegetating.

Mr Clark read about Mr Brett’s situation in The Chronicle on Wednesday, called employment consultant Rodney and met for the first time yesterday.

“I’m quite happy and probably more than a bit nervous,” Mr Brett said.

JPC Engineering, which had four full-time staff and two part-timers, is one of the region’s quiet achievers.

The business moved from Canberra to Canada, Western Australia and to Brisbane before finally calling Cabarlah home.

His projects at the moment range from designing retractable syringes to F111 work for Boeing at the Amberley air base to an aluminium smelter in Dubai.

“And we’ve just finished work for Mt Isa mines,” Mr Clarke said.

Locally he has done several modifications on vehicles for people with disabilities. After tidying the workshop, Mr Brett will be doing computer design.
