Great Western Corporation
Some employers may have concerns about employing people with disability, as a result, people with disability often find it hard to break down these barriers to recruitment. When approached by Personnel West to consider employing a person with a disability, Great Western Corporation, Factory Manager, Vic Stiller, was more than amicable.
After discussing the assistance that Great Western would receive from Personnel West – on site training and support, modifications if required, specialised intervention to tailor the work to suit the client and communicating with Supervisors to ensure productivity was consistent, a tour was conducted of the factory.
Touring the premises and seeing the work first hand, Personnel West staff together with Vic identified a variety of jobs that could be tailored to suit people with disabilities.
Great Western Corporation is amongst Australia’s leading metal fabricators, machinists, manufacturers and finishers. Great Western manufacture and supply assemblies or components for virtually any product made from metal.

Being an Employer who understands the effects work can have on a disability and considers flexible working arrangements allows for the retention of trained and dedicated staff whilst developing consistent outputs.
Recently Great Western allowed a young person who has not had much opportunity to work, to “have a go”. Unfortunately, it was decided that the work did not suit him. The trial for the young person may not have resulted in employment; however there were many other benefits.
Thanks to Great Western and the commitment of the staff there, this young person is now more aware of the kind of work he is capable of, the hours he can consistently work, the support he requires and the strength required to cope with managing work and a disability. It was a great learning opportunity that was presented to this person.
When organisations employ people with disability, they benefit from having employees who are willing to learn, and capable of doing their job effectively and efficiently. Low absenteeism and staff turnover, low incidence of workplace injury and employee loyalty add to create productive and cost effective businesses.
