Why employ someone with a disability?
Supply Needed Skills
People with disability work across a wide range of occupations at all levels of competency. With labour shortages forecast to hit all major industries over the next 5 years, it makes sense to avoid future staffing problems by expanding your workforce through the employment of people with disability.
No Extra Costs
There are usually no extra costs to hire and train a person with disability. In fact these costs can be significantly lower. If needed, the Workplace Modification Scheme can be accessed.
Retain Skilled Staff
Workers with disability may have lower turnover rates than other employees. Employees with disability often feel they have more to prove and are keen to progress. Sometimes high turnover jobs can be stabilised when employers start recruiting job seekers with disability.
Lower Absenteeism
Most people with a disability are not perpetually sick and do not need or take more time off than anyone else due to illness. Recent research has revealed up to 39 per cent lower absenteeism and use of sick leave among staff with disability.
Productive Workers
Most people with disability work at normal productivity levels and receive full wages. If not then productivity based wages can be implemented via the Supported Wage System. For job seekers who need extra time settling into employment, take advantage of wage subsidies or the Work Experience Placement Program.
Increased Safety
Research shows people with disability have fewer accidents at work and significantly less workers compensation incidents.
Higher Morale
Employing people with disability can build staff morale and teamwork, raise management awareness of workplace practices and conditions and increase customer and staff loyalty.
