Wage Subsidies

Wage subsidies are payments made to eligible employers to help cover the costs of paying wages in the first few months of employment of a person with disability or a person experiencing other barriers to employment. They aim to increase the competitiveness of workers, including those with disability.

Work Experience Placement Program

The Work Experience Placement (WEP) program provides employers with a great opportunity to see how someone operates in a working environment. The program also provides job seekers with the opportunity to improve their work skills, and to be able to demonstrate what they have to offer to a potential employer.

The Australian Government, through the Work Experience Placement program, will meet the cost of work-related insurance for eligible job seekers to help overcome one of the main problems when organising work experience.

Employers will not be required to pay someone who participates in WEP. However, if they decide to employ a participant, they may simply end the WEP and then enter into an employment relationship with them.

Work Experience Placements can be between 5 days and a maximum 8 weeks long.

Supported Wage Scheme

Most Australians who have disability and participate in the open workforce do so at full rates of pay. However, there are some people who are unable to find or keep a job at full wage rates due to the effect of disability on their workplace productivity.

The Supported Wage System is a process that allows employers to pay less than the minimum wage by matching a person’s productivity with a fair wage. With the Supported Wage System, eligible people with disability can access a reliable process of productivity based wage assessment to determine fair pay for fair work.

Workplace Modifications Scheme

There is help available with the cost of workplace adjustments or modifications needed to accommodate a worker with disability in a job.

While the majority of workers with disability won’t require any workplace modifications, the Workplace Modifications Scheme aims to make accommodating employees with disability in the workplace easier.

The Workplace Modifications Scheme pays for the cost involved in modifying the workplace or purchasing special or adaptive equipment for eligible employees with disability. It is also available to existing employees if they have had a change in duties, career progression, change in disability or a new modification becomes available that would increase their productivity.
