How To Assist Your Client To Prepare For Open Employment
You can assist your client to prepare for their first intake assessment at Personnel West by supporting them in the following areas:
- Ensure that it is paid employment that your client is seeking. They may just want something to do and a voluntary position would suffice. (Please note: Personnel West is not able to support people long term in unpaid positions.)
- Check that your client has a reasonable understanding of the basic requirements of employment (e.g. attending work, reporting to supervisor, complying with instructions).
- Support your client to understand what clothes to wear for a job interview and the importance of personal grooming. It is a great idea to ask your client to dress as if they were going to attend an interview when they come to their first meeting with Personnel West.
- Support your client to become familiar with using Public Transport or Taxis independently.
- Find out what interests your client has and arrange some work experience of a similar volunteer position in that industry.
Important Points To Remember
We recommend that you provide as much support as needed when you first place your client into a voluntary position so it is a positive experience for them. However it is important that you are both working towards a long term goal of supporting your client towards becoming more confident and independent.
We recommend that your client participates in an activity like this for approximately 6 months before you approach Personnel West: this way you will easily be able to demonstrate that your client is ready for Open Employment.
We would require the name of a supervisor at the place of work where the voluntary activity took place, so we can contact them to verify your client’s attendance, punctuality and ability to remain reasonably focused with minimal support.
